“Hotchkiss is particularly interested in time balls — once raised and dropped in harbors to help ships set their marine chronometers — as an obsolete metaphor for the suspension of time. For the artist, whose hard-edged Flashe and acrylic paintings are crisply rendered in vibrant, matte colors, the ratio of her art-making to others’ art-viewing will never be one-to-one. And yet the possible outcome of both activities is to enter a pocket of time that sets its own, slower pace.” (Press release)
